The Clever Korner

I need communications somewhere with no cell signal

Separate two questions that get muddled: reaching the outside world, and talking across your own property. The second one is cheap, independent, and the one most people never solve.

What actually works

◆ Proven
Across your own place: LoRa mesh radio

$25–45 a node, miles of range, works with every other service down, and needs no subscription or tower. **One node on the highest point you can reach usually covers a whole farm.** Height beats power, every time.

◆ Proven
Wire the backhaul if you possibly can

One buried conduit run beats any amount of wireless cleverness — and pull a string with the cable so the next one is easy. Mount access points **inside** metal buildings; steel is a wall.

◇ Plausible
To the outside world: satellite or a cell booster

Both work, both are a monthly bill, and both go down. Useful, but don't build anything that *has* to have them — which is the whole argument for keeping notifications on your own network.

◆ Proven
Handheld radios

Unglamorous and immediately useful for two people working opposite ends of a property. No infrastructure at all.
