The Clever Korner

How much does AgOpenGPS actually cost to build?

The documented builds land between about £700 and £1,500 — roughly $1,000 to $1,600 — and the receivers are the biggest single line by a distance. The number you should not trust is any single figure, including ours: it depends on whether you buy or build the board, whether you already own a tablet, and whether you fabricate your own brackets. Budget above the headline, because the published totals come from people who already owned a bench.

What actually works

◆ Proven
Open-source autosteer on a legacy tractor

The itemised builds, the dealer stack they're measured against, and the first-build costs the parts lists leave out.

$1,000–1,300 in parts
◆ Proven
Your own RTK base station

~$300 more if you want corrections nobody can switch off. Often the difference between a build that works everywhere and one that works where there's signal.

~$300, once
◆ Proven
The receivers are the budget

In the published £700 build, £430 of the £700 was GNSS — nearly two-thirds. Everything else is motor, board and odds. Price the receiver first and the rest follows.

◆ Proven
The dealer figure is a stack, not a price

If someone tells you activation is only $1,000, they're quoting one line of it. On a legacy tractor with no display and no receiver you buy the whole stack — a universal display alone lists around $5,495, and a legacy steering controller runs $3,300–$4,100 plus parts and labour.

◆ Proven
Add the yearly signal to any dealer comparison

About $600 a year. A purchase price amortises; a subscription never does, and on small acreage it can exceed everything the system saves you.
