The Clever Korner

Can I put GPS guidance on an old tractor?

Yes, and the tractor's age is almost irrelevant — none of the four pieces cares what year it was built. The steering motor clamps where the wheel sits, so there is no hydraulic plumbing and nothing to integrate with a computer the tractor doesn't have. An open station is fine; a 1948 tractor is fine. What actually matters is the condition of the steering box, not the date on the hood.

What actually works

◆ Proven
Open-source autosteer on a legacy tractor

A column-mounted motor, a receiver on the roof, a tablet, and a control board. The original steering wheel bolts back on top of the motor.

Using your phone's GPS to guide the tractor

The shortcut everyone tries first. A phone is accurate to metres; guidance needs an inch.

Free, and worth it

Fix the slop in the steering box first

This is the one real disqualifier. A worn box means the wheel turns before the wheels do, and no amount of correction closes a gap the machine can't feel. Fix it the old way, with a wrench, before you spend anything on electronics.

You still need sky

RTK needs a clear view of it. Heavy tree cover and barns are where guidance stops, on any system at any price.
