The black-barrel stock tank heater
Thermal mass is real. It is nowhere near enough, and the videos skip the night it matters.
What it is
A black-painted, water-filled barrel or jugs floated in or set beside a stock tank, meant to absorb solar heat during the day and keep the tank from freezing at night.
The numbers
- In a mild cold snap it buys a few degrees and delays ice. That part is honest.
- In a real hard freeze — single digits, wind, three days without sun — it does not keep a tank open. Nothing passive at that scale does.
- A hundred head with no water for a day is a far more expensive problem than a $25–45 de-icer.
Why it's here
It's graded ✕ not because the physics is fake but because the application is. Thermal mass helps a marginal night and fails the night that actually threatens your stock — which is precisely backwards from what a safety system should do.
The catch
Use it as a supplement to a de-icer if you like, never as a replacement in cold country. And whatever you use, put a current clamp on the de-icer circuit — the common failure is a de-icer that quietly stopped drawing power, and a tank that looks fine right up until the morning it isn't.
